The first full trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu, the upcoming theatrical film continuing the Disney+ series, has dropped, showcasing a significantly expanded Star Wars universe and a focus on bounty hunting in the New Republic era. The preview highlights a return to high-stakes action, with the duo taking mercenary work five years after Return of the Jedi.
Hutt Crime Lords & New Threats
The trailer prominently features the Hutts – notorious crime bosses – in a way unseen since Jabba the Hutt’s demise. Notably, Rotta the Hutt, son of Jabba, will appear, played by Jeremy Allen White (The Bear ). This signals a return to the underworld elements of Star Wars, where political instability and criminal enterprises thrive.
The Hutts’ presence is critical because the New Republic’s early years were marked by weak central control over many systems, creating fertile ground for criminal organizations. The trailer shows Din Djarin fighting in a gladiator arena against a Hutt, implying his work will lead him directly into conflicts with these powerful gangsters.
Fan-Favorite Characters & New Antagonists
Beyond the Hutts, the trailer introduces Embo, a dome-headed bounty hunter from The Clone Wars animated series. Embo is a known lethal operative, suggesting a formidable new antagonist for Mando and Grogu. The inclusion of Zeb, a character from Star Wars Rebels, further expands the live-action universe, blending elements from different eras and fan bases.
A Long-Awaited Return to Theaters
This film marks the first Star Wars theatrical release since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. After nearly seven years, Disney/Lucasfilm is betting on the popularity of The Mandalorian to lure audiences back into cinemas. The $166 million production, directed by Jon Favreau, stars Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver and features Ludwig Göransson’s score.
The long delay between Star Wars films poses a risk: fan interest may have waned. However, the expansion of the universe and the return of beloved characters could reignite excitement.
The film is scheduled for release on May 22, 2026, and will test whether the franchise can recapture its theatrical dominance in a streaming-dominated era. Whether or not this is “the way” remains to be seen.
