Agathans are the oddballs of the vertebrate world. They are the living remnants of a lineage that split off before evolution figured out how to build a jaw.
If you look at them through the lens of modern anatomy, they are missing a lot. Agathans lack the heavy machinery that defines most other craniates. They do not have jaws. They do not have lateral fins supported by bony rays. They lack true vertebrae. Even their inner ears are simpler, missing the horizontal semicircular canal that helps other animals maintain balance in three-dimensional space.
They also lack genital ducts, a feature present in nearly all other craniates.
These are not trivial omissions. The absence of a jaw changes everything about how an animal eats, defends itself, and interacts with its environment. The lack of paired fins limits maneuverability. The absence of true vertebrae means their structural support is different, relying on a notochord for much longer than its successors.
Compared to gnathostomes—the group that includes sharks, bony fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals—agnathans are structurally simpler. Their gills are pouchlike rather than the more complex arch structures seen in jawed vertebrates. Their entire physiological framework is streamlined, or perhaps, underdeveloped depending on your perspective.
This simplicity is not a bug. It is a feature of an ancient survival strategy. While gnathostomes were evolving into predators with crushing bite forces and agile swimming capabilities, agathans like lampreys and hagfish stuck to a niche that required less complexity. They are scavengers. They are parasites. They are filters.
The question is not why they are “primitive.” It is why they survived at all. In a world dominated by jawed competitors, agathans remain. They persist because their lack of certain structures allows them to exist in ways that more complex animals cannot. They slip into flesh. They filter plankton. They endure.
Their existence challenges the assumption that evolution is a straight line toward greater complexity. Agathans prove that simplicity can be a viable endpoint.
